C.M. Butterfly

Ink Drawing

“The most beautiful joy in the world for me is when I rise up out of bed my bed in the middle of the night and reach for a drawing board. In this eternal moment I surrender to the voice telling me what to do.” (Catherine Butterfly)

Born in Greenville, MS in 1952, Butterfly (neé Catherine Whitehead) has lived in Chicago since 1960. In addition to her prolific output of intuitive marker drawings (Butterfly says she has 2,000 works in storage) she pastors with Faith & Love Interracial House of Prayer and cares for her foster and biological family (9 children, 14 grand-children, 6 great-grandchildren).
