Tony Davis is a narrator of urban mythologies. His colorful renderings of street characters in flamboyant garb draw inspiration equally from comic books and the artist's own checkered past. Davis' gallery of rogues includes street walkers, street fighters, hustlers and pimps, the dwellers of an underworld rarely seen in art. Many of Davis' scenes are based on real people and actual events, but others - like Night Army and Black Goons - offer an alternate narrative to the crime and decay of the inner city. This is a tale of redemption in which the very pimps and prostitutes who dragged the neighborhood down rise up like superheroes to take back the streets from the new urban predators and their drug houses.
