Forged in Foil: The Otherworldly Art of Shandrewick Key

July 20, 2025

Article by Emma Hauschild

Project Onward is proud to honor the imaginative and multidimensional talent of Drew Key as our July Artist of the Month. A longtime member of the Project Onward community, Drew brings a bold, tactile energy to everything he creates, blending foil, clay, colored pencil, and papier-mâché into detailed, otherworldly sculptures and drawings that feel pulled from a dream or a sci-fi adventure.

Drew has been sculpting with foil since he was just three years old, inspired by his love of animals, science fiction, and the awe-inspiring creatures he saw on the Discovery Channel. Sharks, snakes, and dinosaurs, his all-time favorites, were the first figures he shaped with his hands, forming the foundation of an artistic practice that continues to grow and evolve.

Now in his 30s, Drew has been part of the Project Onward studio for over a decade.

His work is instantly recognizable: part sculpture, part imagination come to life. Many of Drew’s pieces feature futuristic or prehistoric subjects often armored in foil or detailed with clay, ranging from superhero accessories like Wolverine claws and fantasy creations to life-like sculptures of animals. Drew’s art speaks to his early dream of being a scientist and his lifelong fascination with animals and the unknown.

A skilled drawer as well, Drew enjoys drawing with colored pencils and continues to experiment with different materials and techniques. He credits his mother, a painter and drawer herself, as one of his earliest creative influences.

Drew is a vital part of the Project Onward community, known for his quiet dedication and participation in studio events like Third Fridays, which he especially enjoys. He also took part in a memorable group trip to Wisconsin and regularly attends the artist retreat in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. In this special place, Project Onward artists come together to focus on their work, explore new techniques, and take part in creative workshops. It’s a time of both collaboration and reflection, and Drew thrives in the energy and focus that the retreat provides.

When he’s not making art, Drew loves playing video games like GTA and Mortal Kombat, watching fantasy and sci-fi YouTube videos, and never misses Shark Week. He’s the oldest of four siblings and brings a deep sense of curiosity and creativity to all he does. Whether sculpting a dinosaur from foil or crafting a detailed scene with clay and pencil, Drew Key invites us into a world that is both wild and carefully constructed; a space where science, story, and imagination meet.
